I'm Ada Fugate, from Rockhouse Creek in Letcher County, Kentucky. My granny lived the back half of her life alone, and she never once ate her supper standing at the sink. She cooked for one on purpose and set herself a place like company was coming. These are ten of her suppers, most of them one pan and hardly a dish to wash. Salmon patties out of one can, stewed tomatoes and bread, sauerkraut with the potato on top, tater soup, fried apples, a sweet potato baked in the stove, a pone of cornbread in a little skillet, fried hominy, milk toast, and cornbread and buttermilk in the good glass. And at the end, the table she set every evening she lived alone, and what she said the night I found it laid for one. If you're cooking for one more nights than you used to, tell me down below what your people called supper, and who in your family lived alone and still set her table like somebody was coming. Tell me the county, and tell me her name. I'm setting her whole year of cooking down on paper, one supper at a time. It's coming soon. 0:00 The little skillet, and the table she set 1:41 10.
