The 14-mile Needles Highway, completed in 1922, winds through the rugged granite formations of the Black Hills, including the famous Needles Eye and several narrow tunnels. After a stop at Sylvan Lake and Mount Coolidge, I head onto the 18-mile Wildlife Loop, home to bison, prairie dogs, pronghorn, elk, deer, bighorn sheep, and other wildlife. I also visit the Custer State Park Bison Center and revisit a rainy trip when bison created a memorable traffic jam. It’s a beautiful look at one of South Dakota’s most scenic areas.
