Full build step by step of the Italeri 1/72 scale Macchi C202 Folgore fighter. This video showcases the construction, painting and camouflage, markings, and weathering of the aircraft from beginning to end. Painting the tiny smoke ring camo was really challenging, I probably went a bit too dense with the smoke rings, but it looks okay I guess. Entering service in 1941, the C.202 became one of the Regia Aeronautica’s principal fighters, seeing combat over Malta, North Africa, the Mediterranean, Sicily, and the Eastern Front. The Folgore was valued for its speed, climb rate, maneuverability, aerodynamic design, and low-drag inline-engine configuration, although its relatively light armament could be a limitation against heavily armed Allied aircraft. C.202 squadrons fought RAF Hurricanes and Spitfires, P-40 Warhawks, P-38 Lightnings, and other Allied fighters, performing air superiority, interception, bomber escort, reconnaissance, and ground-attack missions. One of the Folgore’s most distinctive camouflage schemes was the Italian “smoke ring” (fumo di sigaretta) camouflage, consisting of irregular dark green or olive-green rings and loops sprayed over a lighter sand, yellow, or tan base coat. The elaborate pattern was intended to break up the aircraft’s silhouette and provide effective Mediterranean and desert camouflage, while producing one of the most recognizable finishes in Italian military aviation. Smoke-ring patterns varied between aircraft because they were often hand-applied, resulting in differences in ring size, shape, density, overspray, and coverage. The C.202 Folgore remains celebrated for its elegant design, distinctive camouflage, and important role in Italian fighter operations during the North African and Mediterranean campaigns of World War II.
