The thing that immediately grabbed me was the CONTROL. Bobby could go from smooth and delicate to powerful and soaring without ever making it feel forced. His phrasing, dynamics, tone, vibrato, and ability to communicate emotion are absolutely incredible—especially when you remember this performance was recorded live in 1965. There’s also something special about watching performances from this era. No massive production. No studio tricks covering everything up. Just a microphone, musicians, and a vocalist who has to DELIVER. And Bobby Hatfield DELIVERED. “Summertime” has been performed by some of the greatest singers in music history, so putting your own stamp on a song like this isn't easy.
