King Norodom Sihanouk was kept inside Cambodia’s Royal Palace while the Khmer Rouge destroyed much of the family around him. Five of his children and 14 grandchildren died or disappeared; many were never found, and their final hours remain unknown.
This documentary follows the human aftermath behind the fall of Cambodia in 1975: the daughter forced from the French Embassy gate, the children who returned believing their father’s name might protect them, and the princes summoned home under false pretenses. It examines why the Khmer Rouge preserved Sihanouk as a controlled symbol while treating his wider dynasty as a political problem to be eliminated.
From forced labor and disappearance to years of palace confinement, exile, cultural survival, and the eventual restoration of the monarchy, this is the story of a family scattered across Cambodia, China, France, the United States, and beyond. One surviving son would later become King Norodom Sihamoni. But restored ceremony could not identify the graves of the brothers, sisters, and grandchildren who never returned.
