Discover the remarkable life and legacy of Congresswoman Katie Hall, a trailblazing educator, public servant and civil rights leader whose determination helped establish Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a federal holiday. Born in Mound Bayou, Mississippi, and later making Gary, Indiana, her home, Katie Hall spent more than 35 years as an educator before building a career in public service. She served in the Indiana House of Representatives and Indiana State Senate before making history as the first Black woman from Indiana elected to the United States Congress. In Congress, Hall played a pivotal role in one of the nation's most significant civil rights milestones. After years of stalled efforts to establish a federal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Hall introduced and championed legislation that helped move the effort across the finish line. Her bill designated the third Monday in January as the holiday, helping address concerns that had contributed to years of congressional resistance. But Katie Hall's story extends far beyond one piece of legislation. Through interviews, historical photographs and personal reflections, this documentary explores Hall's childhood in the segregated South, her life as an educator, her political career, the challenges she faced as a Black woman in public office, her deep connection to Gary, her faith and commitment to service, and the work being done today to preserve her legacy. Her story is one of perseverance, courage, community and the power of public service to create lasting change. Katie Hall's legacy also offers a challenge to future generations: Why not you?
