🏡 Why We’re Quitting Housesitting (For Now) — Our Honest First Experience in Scotland
We’ve just finished our very first TrustedHousesitters stay — two weeks in the Scottish Highlands, looking after two gorgeous collies in Drumnadrochit, right behind Loch Ness. It was beautiful, cosy, peaceful… and it taught us a lot about what housesitting really feels like when you’ve just sold everything and embraced full‑time freedom.
🐾 The Start: Excitement & Nerves
We arranged this sit months ago from Montenegro. But stepping into someone else’s home — with responsibilities, routines, and two energetic dogs — felt very different from our usual travel rhythm.
🏠 The Reality of Housesitting
The house was lovely, the dogs were wonderful, and the owners had made everything incredibly easy. But even the easiest housesit comes with responsibility: plants, heating, routines, pets who rely on you. After months of living without obligations, it felt like stepping back into a life we’d just left behind.
🌍 What We Learned
We realised that right now, we’re searching for freedom and for our perfect destinations — not commitments that tie us to a place because of a pet schedule. Housesitting is amazing for many people, and maybe it will be right for us in the future… but at this stage of our early‑retirement travel, it doesn’t quite fit.
❄️ And Yes… Scotland Was Cold
Beautiful, but cold. After weeks in northern England and the Highlands, we’re ready for warmth again.
If you want to see what our first housesit was actually like — the dogs, the house, the reflections, and the moment we realised housesitting isn’t for us right now — it’s all in the video.
