What really helps fast bowlers bowl faster? This study used 3D motion analysis and force plates to examine front-leg mechanics in 18 junior fast bowlers. The researchers investigated how the hip and knee function from front-foot contact through to ball release, and whether factors such as run-up speed, knee position, height and body mass predicted ball release speed. Key findings: Run-up speed was the strongest predictor of ball release speed, suggesting that generating greater momentum before the delivery stride may be important for bowling faster. Knee angle at front-foot contact was not significantly associated with ball speed. A 10° increase in knee extension was estimated to increase ball speed by only around 0.25 m/s. The front hip and knee appeared to function largely through eccentric control, helping absorb and control the large forces experienced during front-foot contact rather than simply producing force through concentric extension. The findings challenge the common coaching emphasis on deliberately creating a fully “braced” front knee. For fast bowlers and coaches, the study suggests that improving approach speed, momentum transfer, timing and whole-body coordination may be more important than focusing solely on straightening the front leg.
