Domecasting to Expand Your Reach: Is Your Dome Ready to Connect?

This Fulldome Forum, "Domecasting to Expand Your Reach," brought together Melinda Orms (Cosm, Digistar), Dan Tell (Tow Immersive), Brittany Kundert (Intuitive Planetarium, US Space and Rocket Center), and David Weigel (Intuitive Planetarium, US Space and Rocket Center), moderated by Ryan Moore, to look at what it actually takes to send a live dome experience from one planetarium out to many. The panel landed on a distinction worth keeping. Domecasting passes scripting and camera commands between matched systems; dome streaming sends the whole video signal and can reach venues running almost any software. Each one breaks in its own way. The group walked through the DESI Domecast, the OSIRIS-REx sample return event in Salt Lake City, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory First Look that reached more than 60 domes across six continents, and a live look at the galaxy simulations built for the following night's cast. The most useful stretches were the honest ones: resolution ceilings on public streaming platforms, rehearsal time nobody ever has enough of, the old tension between planetarium teams and institutional IT, and the trouble of getting a researcher into a dome early enough to realize their talk does not have to be a PowerPoint.
