It's 1 PM on the equator, and the ground under your feet is already moving at 1,037 mph. Then Earth starts to spin a little faster, and it never stops. The oceans slide toward the equator and climb the beach, while in Oregon the Pacific drains away from the shore. The rock can't take the new shape, and the earthquakes start. The days race by, you get lighter with every hour, and in Santa Monica the flat ground starts to feel like a slope. At an 84-minute day, nothing on the equator weighs anything at all. Then the rest of the world's oceans arrive, Earth starts throwing its own equator into space, and it ends up with a ring made of itself. The readout in the corner is the length of one day. Under it: what you weigh where you are standing, and what the ground at the equator is now moving faster than. The numbers are real: • Today the equator moves at about 1,037 mph (24,901 miles in 24 hours). That's already faster than sound (767 mph). • Spin faster and the oceans flow toward the equator: they rise there and drain away from the higher latitudes. • The faster the spin, the more it flings you outward. At the equator you'd weigh nothing once a day lasts 84 minutes, about 17 times faster than today. The ground would then be moving at orbital speed, like the space station (about 17,500 mph). • Away from the equator, part of that push runs along the ground, toward the equator. In Santa Monica, a day of about 1 h 45 m would make flat ground feel like a 25–30° slope (our own calculation). • At about a 60-minute day, the equator would move faster than escape velocity (25,020 mph), faster than the 24,791 mph of Apollo 10, the fastest any human has ever traveled. • Haystack Rock, at Cannon Beach, Oregon, is 235 feet tall. • In reality Earth's spin is slowing down: a day gets about 1.8 milliseconds longer every century. Some of it is not real. Nothing could make Earth speed up like this: the energy would have to come from somewhere. How fast the water moves, how high it climbs, and what the earthquakes and the breakup would really look like are a guess, and the very end is made up.
