Why is Elbaf's prince chained to a tree? In One Piece's Elbaf arc the giants live on top of a world tree, sail home on a rainbow, keep a holy book that says the world has already broken twice, wear horned helmets, and hold the prince Loki in chains. Each one has a real counterpart: the Norse myths of Yggdrasil, Bifrost, Loki and the Poetic Edda, the real history of the Viking helmet, and the cartoon Eiichiro Oda says made him love pirates.

Where Oda has spoken on the record (the 2012 VIZ interview, the SBS pages of volume 112) we quote him. Everything else is the real source standing next to the show, with the book, the date and the picture. Spoilers: the anime up to episode 1180. Nothing from the manga.
