Have you ever wondered why you keep repeating the same relationship problems—even when you desperately want things to be different? Why someone who desperately wants to be loved can end up making their partner feel unloved. Why someone who grew up feeling controlled can become controlling. Or why someone who felt emotionally neglected as a child can eventually become emotionally unavailable to the person they love. Your childhood experiences don't just create pain. They can create survival strategies that eventually become relationship patterns—and those patterns can cause you to recreate the very pain you once experienced. In this video, I explain what I call the "Light Side and Dark Side of Healing." The Light Side is understanding what happened TO you. The Dark Side is recognizing what is now happening THROUGH you. For example, someone with an emotional deprivation schema may have grown up feeling emotionally ignored, invalidated, or alone. They learn not to express their feelings because they don't expect anyone to understand or care. But later in an adult relationship, their partner expresses hurt or a need for emotional connection. Instead of recognizing their partner's pain, their schema may interpret that expression as criticism or rejection. They defend themselves. They withdraw. They become frustrated. And without realizing it, they create the same emotional loneliness their partner is experiencing that they once experienced themselves. Their story becomes their partner's story. This can happen with any of the maladaptive schemas. The problem isn't that these people are intentionally trying to hurt their partners. These reactions developed as dysfunctional adaptations for self-protection. The problem is that the adaptation continues long after the original danger is gone. And when you can't see the pattern, you can't change it. This is why self-awareness isn't simply about understanding what happened to you. Real healing requires asking a much harder question: How might my survival strategies be affecting the people I love? That's where the Healthy Adult comes in. The Healthy Adult learns to recognize the schema, question the automatic reaction, stay grounded in the present, and choose a different response. Awareness creates choice. And disciplined healthy choices create freedom. If you're ready to break reactive patterns, become a safer person in your relationships, and stop allowing your past to automatically dictate your present, learn more about Breaking Reactive Patterns: The Blueprint for Building a Safe and Healthy Relationship. The dark side is discovering what those wounds have quietly been doing through you. And real healing begins when you're willing to see both.
