For thirty years, a single federal law made it illegal to fly a normal jet nonstop from Dallas Love Field to anywhere but Texas and four neighboring states. The Wright Amendment passed quietly in 1979, tucked inside a larger transportation bill by Congressman Jim Wright, whose own city had just built the giant new airport that was supposed to replace Love Field entirely. Southwest Airlines, born at Love Field, refused to move and won the right to stay. So Congress boxed the airport in instead: fly to Texas and the 4 bordering states, or fly on a tiny plane, or don't fly at all. One salesman who wanted a simple Dallas-to-Chicago ticket had to buy two separate tickets and connect through Tulsa, because the law made it illegal for an airline to sell him the whole trip. This video traces the full 30-year mechanism: the Dallas-Fort Worth rivalry that built DFW in the first place, Southwest's court fight to stay at Love Field, the slow crack-by-crack erosion of the rule (Alabama, Kansas and Mississippi added in 1997, Missouri in 2005), the 2006 truce that finally set an end date, and the price that truce quietly attached: a permanent cap of 20 gates that still stands today, even as Love Field now moves 18 million passengers a year and its own $2.5 billion expansion cannot add a single one.
