In central Ukraine, archaeologists found circular structures built from hundreds of mammoth bones and tusks, around 18,000 years old. They were built in the harshest phase of the last Ice Age, long before farming and long before the temples of Gobekli Tepe.
Were they homes? Storage? Monuments? Why did people burn bones for fuel? And what are the red-painted mammoth bones found at the nearby site of Mezin? In this video we look at what the evidence says, and what scientists still argue about.
The myth: Ice Age people were simple wanderers who only survived. The evidence: they planned, cooperated, reused materials and built architecture out of the biggest animal on the steppe.
