In 2026, the four NATO countries spending the biggest share of their economies on defence are Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia and Poland. All four sit on the same flat stretch of land, right next to Russia. That is not a coincidence.
Poland learned what this land does the hard way: erased from the map for 123 years, invaded from two sides and overrun in five weeks in 1939, and then moved bodily westward in 1945. This is the story of the Great European Plain, the "hallway of Europe", and why Poland is now building the defences geography never gave it.
