British farming can have one of its strongest income years in a generation and still be in retreat. I follow the numbers behind that contradiction and explain why this is not a normal downturn.
I examine the collapse in farm support, the rising cost of fertiliser, fuel, labour and land, repeated difficult harvests, and the shrinking share farmers receive from food prices. I also look at beef and lamb prices, imports, machinery investment and the closure of farm businesses.
Finally, I explore inheritance tax, succession, changing land ownership, food security and the pressure on medium-sized family farms. I use government data and real examples to ask whether British farming is going through a painful transition or a managed contraction.
