Ardrishaig to Rothesay | Scotland's Shortest Ferry & Victorian Secrets
In this episode, Taco and I leave Ardrishaig and continue our journey south along Scotland's spectacular west coast.
The day begins by following the shores of Loch Fyne towards Tarbert, before boarding the ferry and crossing the loch into Cowal. From there, we're treated to some incredible coastal scenery as we make our way to Tighnabruaich, where we're warmly welcomed by the wonderful team at the Tighnabruaich Hotel.
The hospitality doesn't stop there. We're also spoiled by a local café, another reminder that this journey continues to be powered by the kindness of strangers.
The following morning brings one of the toughest climbs of the trip so far. The road rises steeply above the coastline, rewarding every pedal stroke with breathtaking views across the Firth of Clyde, the Isle of Bute, and the surrounding islands.
Thankfully, the suffering doesn't last forever.
Soon we're boarding the ferry from Colintraive to Rhubodach — officially one of the **shortest scheduled ferry crossings in the United Kingdom, taking just a few minutes to reach the beautiful Isle of Bute.
From there, we ride into Rothesay, the island's main town, where we explore some of its unique attractions including the famous Victorian Toilets, often described as some of the finest surviving public toilets in Britain, and the impressive Rothesay Castle, whose origins date back to the 13th century.
The day finishes with a wander around town, meeting locals and discovering one of the island's hidden gems — Afro Celt, where we enjoy music, conversation, and watch the owner perform accordion tunes in the street.
A day packed with ferries, climbs, castles, island culture, and the characters that make Scotland's west coast so unforgettable.
