Why did Route 66 become the most famous road in America?
Created in 1926, Route 66 connected Chicago with Los Angeles across roughly 2,400 miles of American towns, plains, deserts, and growing cities. But the road became much more than a transportation route.
In this America Through Time documentary, discover how Route 66 carried Depression-era migrants west, supported wartime movement, helped create the postwar American road trip, and gave rise to diners, motels, filling stations, neon signs, and roadside businesses that became part of American culture.
We also explore how John Steinbeck helped popularize the image of the “Mother Road,” how music and television expanded the Route 66 legend, and why automobile travel did not offer the same freedom to every American during segregation.
Then came the Interstate Highway System. Faster highways gradually bypassed Route 66, weakening many roadside communities before the federal highway designation disappeared in 1985.
But Route 66 did not disappear from American memory.
A century after its creation, surviving sections, historic businesses, bridges, motels, signs, and roadside landmarks continue to preserve the story of how Americans traveled—and how the journey itself became part of the destination.
