Welcome to the IIMwalaBanda Reading Comprehension Series. Attempt the RC yourself first here https://www.iimwalabanda.com/post/lev...
RC is roughly 70% of the VARC section in CAT, which makes it one of the most important skills to develop during your preparation. But getting better at RC isn't about simply solving more and more difficult passages.
It is about learning how to read actively, understand the author's argument, identify the structure of a passage, eliminate options intelligently and eventually develop the intuition needed to make the right decisions under time pressure.
In this series, we build RC skills progressively rather than jumping straight into the toughest passages.
Level 1 focuses on developing the fundamentals of reading and comprehension.
Level 2 moves towards CAT-level and CAT PYQ-level passages.
Level 3 pushes you towards more challenging RCs and helps you master the skill under greater complexity.
What you'll learn throughout the series:
✅ How to read each paragraph actively instead of passively
✅ How to create a one-line summary after every paragraph
✅ How to identify the author's central argument, tone and point of view
✅ How to understand the role of different paragraphs
✅ How to eliminate incorrect options systematically
✅ How to identify common traps in RC options
✅ How to "debate" with the author while reading
✅ How to develop intuition through consistent analysis—not guesswork
✅ How to analyse your mistakes and understand the logic behind every option
✅ How to improve accuracy without unnecessarily sacrificing attempts
A simple rule for this series: Practice first. Watch the solution later.
Don't just check whether you got the answer right. Compare your thought process with the solution. Understand why the correct option works, why the other options fail, and where your reasoning differed from the author's.
I also recommend starting with one RC a day, analysing it properly, and then reattempting the RCs you've solved at the end of the week. This helps you determine whether you genuinely understood the passage or simply got the answer right by chance.
And don't ignore your VA strategy.
The remaining portion of VARC includes Para Summary, Para Jumbles and Odd Sentence Out. For many aspirants, Para Jumbles and Odd Sentence Out can consume significant time without producing consistent accuracy. After attempting enough mocks, look at your own data. If certain VA question types are repeatedly hurting your time and accuracy, it may be worth investing more of that preparation time in RC instead.
The goal isn't to master every question type equally.
The goal is to maximise your VARC score.
