Chambered in 12.7x108mm, it is the natural conclusion of the russian attempts to miniaturize and reduce the weight of their HMGs from the DShK ("Dushka") to the NSV-12.7 to the 6P49/6P50 KORD. The KORD-R was recommended to both the FSB and the VDV. Meanwhile, beginning in the past decade or so, the West is looking towards belt-feds in .338 Norma Magnum as the balance between size and firepower.
