A country with nuclear weapons and a permanent seat on the UN Security Council couldn't protect one of its own town halls.
On the evening of October 17, someone set fire to the town hall in Limoges, built in 1883. Its 43-meter clock tower came down in the flames. That same day, 550,000 people marched across France, and nearly 2,400 were arrested. By the next evening, almost 1,000 police officers and gendarmes had been injured. A student protest over missing teachers had, in a single month, turned into nationwide street violence.
The prime minister replied to Mélenchon online: "This is YOUR political responsibility." The next evening Macron addressed the nation for ten minutes, said "tonight we all feel anger and shame," and offered not a single cent in concessions.
Many people think this is just the French taking to the streets again. But this time the date was set online, those fanning the flames stayed out of sight, and those doing the damage covered their faces. Nobody owned it. For fifty years France has paid off unrest with borrowed money. This year, there was no one left to pay.
Why do rioters in France believe that smashing works, and looters believe they'll get away with it?
Why does a country that owes less than Greece and Italy pay more than both to borrow?
How did France's factories, its budget and its parliament stop working, one after another?
In this episode, we start from the fire in Limoges and trace, layer by layer, how a state loses the power to do what it says.
