The history of Sikkim begins with the Lepcha people, who were the original inhabitants. They lived in Sikkim and Darjeeling long before Tibetan settlers arrived. Sikkim was once an independent kingdom in the eastern Himalayas. In 1641, the Lepcha rulers were replaced by a Buddhist kingdom under the Chogyal. In the 18th century, Sikkim came under British control when they wanted to open trade routes with Tibet. After India gained independence in 1947, Sikkim initially remained an independent country. However, in 1975, Sikkim officially merged with India and became a state.
