September 12, 2026 Fourth-ranked Texas pulled off one of the most dramatic comebacks of the young season, rallying from a 20-point fourth-quarter deficit to stun top-ranked Ohio State 24-23 on Hollywood Smothers's game-winning touchdown run with 25 seconds left. Ohio State controlled the game for three quarters, building a commanding 23-3 lead behind a dominant performance from quarterback Julian Sayin, who threw for 278 yards, and star receiver Jeremiah Smith, who caught eight passes for 164 yards and a touchdown, finally looking like the All-American many had expected against Texas after being held largely in check in two previous meetings between the programs. The Buckeyes' offense produced just a single field goal after halftime, but their early cushion looked more than enough. Texas had other ideas. Arch Manning sparked the rally with a touchdown pass to Ryan Wingo early in the fourth quarter, and Smothers punched in a score of his own with 7:14 remaining to cut the deficit further. Ohio State still had a chance to close it out, driving into position for what would have been a clinching field goal, but Connor Hawkins, who had already connected on three field goals earlier in the game, missed from 45 yards. Texas took over and drove the length of the field, with Smothers leaping over the pile for a 1-yard touchdown with 25 seconds to play. Gil Spetic's extra point, held by Michael Chiumento and snapped by Tanner Dubuc, made it 24-23. Ohio State's final desperation pass was intercepted as time expired, sending Texas players storming the field in celebration. The win improved Texas to 2-0 and is being called one of the biggest regular-season victories of head coach Steve Sarkisian's tenure, as well as a signature moment for Manning, who has faced steady scrutiny for not yet matching his Heisman-caliber recruiting hype. Ohio State fell to 1-1.
