Pyatigorsk owes its birth to a unique climate and sources of healing water; there are about fifty of them. In 1830, Emperor Nicholas I, in honor of the five-domed mountain Beshtau, by his decree transformed Hot Waters into the city of Pyatigorsk. The city planners were the famous Italian architects brothers Giuseppe and Giovanni Bernardazzi. They erected many buildings in Pyatigorsk, a cultural center, including drinking galleries and the construction of medicinal baths.
