In 1976 a 23 year old woman named Anneliese Michel died after undergoing 67 exorcisms. Her parents and two Catholic priests were convicted of negligent homicide. The defense played the tapes in court. A German judge listened to all 42 hours and said on record he could not explain what he heard. Was she possessed? Was she sick? The answer is more complicated than either.
