The statement reports that, following several ‘meet-and-greet’ sessions held through a door in an indoor facility, the relationship between the two lions was deemed to be positive. Furthermore, as Ito showed signs of being in oestrus, cohabitation began on the afternoon of 26 July 2026. Although they were seen posturing towards each other at the start of cohabitation, they are now spending their time calmly whilst maintaining a moderate distance, and are reported to be in good health with no serious injuries. However, as continued observation is required, the lions will not be on display for the time being. Furthermore, the indoor lion and hyena enclosure within the Hippo and Lion Pavilion is currently closed.
