In July 2019, a cruise ship more than a thousand feet long was lifted completely out of the sea off Grand Bahama. No crane did it. The ship underneath, the BOKA Vanguard, had flooded its own ballast tanks, sunk its deck under the surface, and then pumped itself back up with the cruise ship on top.
Using Boskalis footage, drone footage of the Carnival Vista operation, U.S. Navy imagery and original diagrams, we explain how a semi-submersible heavy-lift ship sinks on purpose, why it stays upright with its deck under water, how a damaged destroyer, the USS Cole, was carried home the same way, and what happened when one of these ships did not come back up.
