Germany… a country that once had no fixed borders of its own. A land divided into hundreds of small and powerful states, constantly fighting each other. So fragmented that the French philosopher Voltaire famously mocked the Holy Roman Empire, saying it was neither holy, nor Roman, nor an empire. And then came one man—Otto von Bismarck. Standing before parliament, Bismarck declared that the great questions of the time would not be decided by speeches and resolutions, but by “blood and iron.” What followed was the rise of a power that would repeatedly reshape the map of Europe—and eventually, the world. Germany is one of history's greatest contradictions. It gave the world Goethe, Kant and Beethoven—yet also became the birthplace of one of the most brutal and systematic regimes of mass murder in history. It fought two World Wars, helped plunge Europe into unprecedented destruction, was reduced to ruins, divided into two countries, and separated by the Berlin Wall. And yet, from those ruins, Germany rose again. Today, without firing a shot, Germany remains one of Europe's most powerful nations—driven by its engineering, industry, economy and institutions. So what is the DNA of Germany? In this episode of Modern Empires, we take a journey through the complete story of Germany—its history, politics, wars, economy, society and geopolitics—to understand how a fragmented land became one of the most consequential powers in modern history. Joining us on this journey is Prof. Ummu Salma Bava. Dr. Bava has been honoured with one of Germany's highest civilian distinctions. She has also served as Guest Faculty at the Foreign Service Institute, Ministry of External Affairs, and as Director of the UGC Europe Area Studies Programme.
