Drones were supposed to kill artillery. Ukraine proved them wrong. When drones took over the skies of Ukraine, many analysts declared the age of the big guns over. Howitzers were too big, too slow and too easy to spot. Ukraine didn’t give up on artillery. It reinvented it. In this video, we break down how Ukraine fused drones and artillery into a single deadly system: guns buried in underground caponiers, moved only at night behind a shield of interceptor drones, and firing just a handful of precise shells before disappearing again. At the heart of this revolution is the Bohdana, a Ukrainian-built 155mm howitzer nicknamed “the sniper rifle of artillery.” We look at its combat debut at Snake Island, its transformation from a truck-mounted system into a towed gun that survives drone strikes, Ukraine’s production of around 40 guns per month, the warning signs facing its factory, the new Marta variant, and why Russia now appears to be copying the concept with its 2S44 Giatsint-K. Is artillery obsolete in the drone age, or has it simply gone underground?
