Introduction to Contrast Enhancement

Intravenous contrast is often used on both MR and CT to increase both the sensitivity (find lesions) and specificity (diagnose lesions). Contrast enhancement in the CNS (central nervous system) may be intravascular (within vessels), extravascular (outside vessels or interstitial) or a combination of both.
