There’s a lot to see in the Newberry Crater, and Segment Two starts with a visit to the Obsidian Flow before ascending an easy gravel road to the amazing vistas atop Paulina Peak. Afterward, you’ll encounter some more challenging off road riding on the out and back up to McKay Butte (side note: if the ride from the highway to McKay Crossing Campground is not to your liking, you can skip the out and back to the butte and just take the main gravel road back to the highway from there). From McKay Butte, the track leads you into LaPine, where you’ll want to top off your gas tanks again.
Next up is a leisurely ride from La Pine through some easy forest tracks and along the Cascade Lakes Highway to Todd Lake Road. The ride from here to Three Creeks Lake is the most challenging section of the entire route. It’s also the most fun riding, but if you’d rather not tackle this section you can easily continue on Cascade Lakes Highway to Bend and then take Highway 20 to Sisters to avoid it entirely.
If you choose to continue on Todd Lake Road you’ll enjoy twisty, uneven forest roads through beautiful scenery (and a water crossing) before ascending the backside of Three Creeks to an out and back visit to Three Creeks Lake. There is a store here that is open seasonally.
After Three Creeks, you’ll skirt the very edge of The Three Sisters Wilderness as you loop around to Trout Creek Butte. Make sure you check out the abandoned fire lookout tower and the spectacular views of the Cascade Range on the butte’s west side before you descend into Sisters where you’ll find gas, food, and lodging options galore.
