In “The Mentalist,” there are countless clever manipulations, and most of the time they bring a sense of relief and joy—for example, when Jane ultimately exposes the true perpetrator with a clever trick, it’s a relief. But there’s also the opposite—when psychological manipulation causes nothing but fear and terror. Kristina Frye is the worst of these cases in the entire series—a genuine moment of horror.
