Certain places hold special feelings to most people. This is certainly true to me with multiple locations I can think of in different places I've visited holding wonderful memories and bringing the past vividly back to life. Langland Bay is certainly one of those with countless memories of great days golfing back in my youth, learning my game with friends and ultimately having plenty of fun.
I was lucky growing up close by. A 15 minute walk or a few minutes on my bike and I was at the club, located by the sea and up from Langland beach. With clubs kept in the locker room, I could be out on the course in no time at all and played in all weathers, as coastal golf can provide, with wind, rain, mist and even the occasional frost not stopping us from playing. The enthusiasm youth provides!
The course is probably best described as a hybrid with mostly open parkland holes interspersed with several style links holes. This gives the course a great variety and partnered with the views, especially once you get to the higher parts makes a superb blend and gives a breath-taking experience when the visibility is good.
The course itself provides a good test of your game with a good mixture of holes of varying lengths. A tricky opening par 3 is always a tough start but a good par 5 followed by two shorter par 4's allow you to settle yourself. On the fifth tee you get the first "wow" view but don't let it detract you as you need an accurate drive here. The following 6th, stroke index 1 is always a tough hole with a risk vs reward drive decision. Cut the corner for a shorter approach or play it safe. This hole off the back tees is incredibly tough and a real beast in the wind. The difficult 7th follows with a nice generous double fairway but then a blind approach to a tricky green. This hole transitions from parkland to links and sets the scene for the 8th, my favourite with its tee box located high above Whiteshell point, overlooking Caswell and beyond down the Gower coast. On a clear day you can see Lundy and often over towards the channel to Ilfracombe. The recently extended ninth hole finishes off a brilliantly varied nine at the furthest point from the clubhouse.
The difficult dog leg tenth follows and the short 11th before the very quirky 12th hole. A fully blind 90 degree dogleg drive for the gents with a very risky chance of going for the green. Two more traditional parkland holes follow before the 15th, similar to the 7th as it heads due south towards the coast. The signature 16th is the hole many come here to play with its green clinging to the side of the cliff. Go left and you've a difficult pitch back up , go right and it's often a lost ball! The 17th features a great drive off the hillside before the final hole challenges you with water by the clubhouse. A great course and one I've such a fond regard for.
Massive thanks to Andrew and his brilliant team here for making this happen. I had the best afternoon and hopefully that comes over in this video. A total recommend to come here. Stunning location, friendly and a top place. Love it 😍💯👌⛳
