A single banana contains 422 milligrams of potassium — the mineral that fires the electrical signal inside every muscle contraction in your body. But potassium is only the beginning. The vitamin B6 inside a banana directly activates protein synthesis in your muscle tissue, and the tryptophan converts to serotonin — reducing perceived effort during exercise at the neurological level
In controlled cycling trials, bananas supported prolonged exercise about as well as carbohydrate sports drinks when researchers matched the carbohydrate dose. The result did not come from an instant potassium surge.
This video follows what happens after you eat a banana, from starch and sugar digestion to blood glucose and working muscle. It explains why ripeness changes carbohydrate availability, why greener bananas contain more resistant starch, and why one banana cannot immediately prevent or treat muscle cramps.
You will also learn when a ripe banana may work well before or during prolonged exercise, when greener fruit better suits an ordinary meal, and what the evidence actually says about potassium, vitamin B6, tryptophan and dopamine.
