মাসান হোলি : চিতাভস্মে রঙ খেল্ল্য কাশী, মৃত্যুক্ষেত্রেই ভক্তির উল্লাস বারাণসী, উত্তরপ্রদেশ: ভারতের অন্যান্য প্রান্তে যখন আবির-গুলালের রঙে মেতে ওঠে হোলির উৎসব, তখন প্রাচীন নগরী Varanasi-তে পালিত হয় এক সম্পূর্ণ ভিন্ন এবং রহস্যময় ঐতিহ্য— মাসান হোলি। এখানে রঙ নয়, চিতার ভস্ম দিয়েই উদযাপিত হয় হোলি। বারাণসীর কাশীর ( Kashi ) বিখ্যাত ‘মাসান হোলি’( Masan Holi ) । সারা দেশ যখন আবির-জলরঙে ব্যস্ত, বারাণসীর মাসান হোলিতে তখন ব্যবহার হয় শ্মশানের ছাই, বাবা মাসান নাথ মন্দিরের প্রাঙ্গণে এই খেলায় মেতে ওঠেন অঘোরীরা। ২০২৬ সালেও সেই প্রাচীন রীতি মেনে কাশীর দুই ঐতিহাসিক শ্মশানঘাট— Manikarnika Ghat এবং Harishchandra Ghat-এ অনুষ্ঠিত হয় এই ব্যতিক্রমী উৎসব। শ্মশানের চিতাভস্ম মেখে সাধু-সন্ন্যাসীরা নৃত্য ও কীর্তনে মেতে ওঠেন, চারদিকে ধ্বনিত হয় “হর হর মহাদেব” ধ্বনি। ঐতিহ্যের শিকড় মাসান হোলির এই প্রথা জড়িয়ে রয়েছে Lord Shiva-র উপাসনার সঙ্গে। পুরাণ মতে, শিব শ্মশানবাসী দেবতা এবং তিনি ভস্মকে পবিত্র বলে মনে করেন। কাশীতে বিশ্বাস করা হয়, রংভরি একাদশী-র পর শিব তাঁর ভক্তদের নিয়ে শ্মশানে এসে হোলি খেলেন। সেই বিশ্বাস থেকেই শতাব্দী প্রাচীন এই আচার পালিত হয়ে আসছে। ভক্তরা চিতাভস্ম মেখে শিবের প্রতি ভক্তি প্রকাশ করেন এবং জীবনের চূড়ান্ত সত্য—মৃত্যুর অনিবার্যতা—কে স্মরণ করেন। আধ্যাত্মিক দর্শন কাশীর আধ্যাত্মিক দর্শনে মৃত্যু কোনো সমাপ্তি নয়, বরং মুক্তির পথ। তাই শ্মশান এখানে ভয়ের স্থান নয়, বরং মোক্ষের দ্বার বলে মনে করা হয়। মাসান হোলির মাধ্যমে সেই দর্শনই প্রতিফলিত হয়—জীবন যেমন উৎসবমুখর, তেমনি মৃত্যুও অনিবার্য। Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh: In the ancient city of Varanasi, where spirituality and mortality coexist along the banks of the Ganges, a unique and mysterious form of Holi—Masan Holi—was observed in 2026 with traditional fervour. Unlike the colourful festivities seen across India, Masan Holi is played with ashes from funeral pyres at the cremation grounds of Manikarnika Ghat and Harishchandra Ghat, symbolising the philosophical acceptance of life and death. History and Mythological Origin The tradition of Masan Holi is deeply connected with Lord Shiva, who is believed to reside in Kashi (Varanasi) and is often described as the deity of the cremation grounds. According to Hindu mythology, after bringing Goddess Parvati to Kashi during Rangbhari Ekadashi, Lord Shiva celebrated Holi in the cremation ground with his followers—spirits, ganas and ascetics—using sacred ash instead of colours. This symbolic celebration represents the Shaivite philosophy that life and death are part of the same cosmic cycle.
