In the autumn of 1957, the Republic of San Marino became the stage for a political crisis that drew the attention of the international press. Following twelve years of socialist-communist rule, an anti-communist majority took power in the wake of the “events of Rovereta”—a transition that unfolded against a backdrop of Italian military intervention, political pressure from the United States, and the dynamics of the Cold War. Drawing on extensive research conducted in archives across San Marino, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States, this volume reconstructs the rise and consolidation of the anti-communist government between 1957 and 1963. It demonstrates how political stabilization was achieved through substantial economic subsidies and the marginalization of the opposition. The case of San Marino not only offers a small-scale lens through which to examine key issues in post-war Italian and European history—such as the fear of communism, American hegemony, and the fragility of democratic systems and political freedoms—but also serves as a unique vantage point for analyzing the interplay between economic growth and political repression during the 1950s and 1960s. Furthermore, it sheds light on the relations between microstates and great powers, the concrete ways in which the global confrontation between opposing blocs affected the life of a small community, and the instrumental ambivalence surrounding the term “democracy.” 🎙️ Nuovo allo streaming o vuoi migliorare?
