This Hidden Temple Has 1,300 Years of History | Nagano, Japan

Tucked away in the mountains of Tateshina, Nagano Prefecture, Tsuganeji Temple (津金寺) is a historic Buddhist temple with a story stretching back more than 1,300 years. According to temple tradition, the history of Tsuganeji dates back to 702, during Japan’s Nara period. It is said that the Buddhist monk Gyōki visited this area and enshrined a statue of Kannon, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, marking the beginning of the temple. Over the centuries, Tsuganeji became much more than a remote mountain temple. From the Kamakura period through the Muromachi period, it is said to have flourished as a center of Buddhist learning where monks studied four major traditions: Tendai, Shingon, Hossō, and Zen. At its height, numerous temple buildings and monks’ quarters are believed to have surrounded the main temple. Tsuganeji also has a connection to one of Japan’s most famous samurai warlords, Takeda Shingen. During the turbulent Sengoku period, when powerful warlords fought for control of Japan, Shingen supported and protected the temple. Historical documents associated with the temple still provide a glimpse into its connection with the Takeda clan. But Tsuganeji's history also includes a tragic chapter. In 1582, near the end of the Sengoku period, the temple is said to have been burned during the military campaigns of Oda Nobunaga’s forces. Many of its buildings and records were lost. The temple was later rebuilt, allowing its long history to continue into the present day. Several important cultural treasures remain at Tsuganeji. One of them is the Tsuganeji Shigeno Clan Stone Pagoda, dating from the early 13th century. These stone monuments are associated with the Shigeno clan, a powerful family that once controlled parts of eastern Shinano, the historical name for this region of Nagano. Another highlight is the Myōkenden, a small hall built in 1836 during the late Edo period. It features intricate carvings by master craftsmen from the Suwa region, including Tachikawa Washirō Tomimasa, a renowned carpenter and sculptor who also worked on buildings at Suwa Taisha. In spring, the surrounding grounds become especially beautiful when katakuri, or Japanese dogtooth violets, bloom among the trees. Unlike the famous temples of Kyoto and Nara, Tsuganeji is a quiet place where you are unlikely to encounter large crowds.
