In this video, I explore the UNIX file system and how UNIX manages files internally. The focus is on understanding the underlying data structures, how file information is stored on disk, and how the kernel uses this information to access file data. Topics covered: Overview of the UNIX file system Disk inode and its structure In-core inode and its role in kernel memory Difference between disk inode and in-core inode Direct and indirect block addressing How file data is mapped to disk blocks Understanding file system internals through data structures and calculations This is part of my ongoing study of UNIX internals, based on The Design of the UNIX Operating System by Maurice J. Bach. The goal is to understand these concepts beyond theory and gradually implement them through C++. Reference: The Design of the UNIX Operating System — Maurice J.
