Welcome to Lecture Number 34 of Chemical Bonding by HP Sir
In this lecture, we will continue our journey through Molecular Orbital Theory (MOT) and study the Electronic Configuration of Molecular Orbitals Beyond 14 Electrons. We will understand the molecular orbital diagrams of O₂, O₂⁺, O₂²⁺ and O₂⁻, along with the calculation of bond order and the stability order of different oxygen species. This lecture is designed to build strong conceptual understanding from basic to advanced level, with important concepts and questions for JEE Mains, JEE Advanced, NEET & Olympiad Chemistry preparation.
In this lecture, we will discuss the molecular orbital diagrams of O₂, O₂⁺, O₂²⁺, O₂⁻, F₂ and Ne₂, along with their bond order calculations. We will learn the stability order of O₂²⁺, O₂⁺, O₂, O₂⁻ and O₂²⁻, and solve the comparison of O–O bond lengths in K₂O₂, Na₂O₂, O₂ and O₂(PtF₆). We will also learn a short trick for calculating bond order and discuss an important JEE Advanced PYQ related to the color of X₂ molecules of Group 17 elements. Additionally, we will understand why O₂ is paramagnetic and colorless, whereas F₂ is diamagnetic and yellow. These concepts will help you develop a strong understanding of Molecular Orbital Theory, bond order, magnetic properties, bond length and the color of molecules.
