With the Strait of Hormuz under pressure and the Houthis advancing near Bab el-Mandeb, two of the world’s most important energy and shipping routes face growing security risks. The Houthi takeover of Mocha in Yemen has raised new concerns for Saudi Arabia, whose oil exports could face pressure from both sides, Iran’s influence around Hormuz and Houthi attacks near Bab el-Mandeb. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman reportedly called US President Trump twice seeking U.S. military action against the Houthis, but Trump declined. Washington has instead offered Saudi Arabia intelligence and targeting information. Meanwhile, Houthi missile and drone attacks on southern Saudi Arabia and Saudi strikes inside Yemen are raising fears that the fragile Saudi-Houthi ceasefire could be breaking down. The crisis is already affecting global oil markets, with Brent crude rising above $100 a barrel and approaching $110. A prolonged disruption around both Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb could push up oil prices, transport costs and inflation, while putting further pressure on the global economy. Pakistan and Türkiye also face a major strategic question under the Makkah Defence Agreement with Saudi Arabia. If the conflict escalates further and Saudi Arabia faces major attacks on its territory or oil infrastructure, could the agreement lead to a direct military role for Pakistan and Türkiye?
