In 1630-31, the bubonic plague ripped its way through Europe, taking with it three of the promising young composers who open our program. Before disaster struck, these Venetian musicians were enjoying the new freedom that Silk Road economic prosperity afforded them to perform and compose outside of a single court. The recent invention of movable type for music enabled them to earn money from publishing their compositions. In this exciting world of possibility, these enterprising young musicians forged a new instrumental form, the sonata, inspired by the vocal canzonas of generations before them.  These sonatas grew increasingly idiomatic for the violin, showcasing the vocal virtuosity of the 17th-century playing style. While the first cohort of sonata composers met tragically untimely ends at the hands of the plague, falling into comparative (undeserved) obscurity, their surviving colleagues took the form forward throughout the rest of the century. Some of them managed to find their own more scandalous untimely ends, while others survived to a ripe old age as revered musicians in their own times.  Listen to the whole concert radio-style without commentary here:    • Rising from the Ashes of Plague: Music for...   Performed by Guts Baroque: Sylvia Schwartz, baroque violin John Ott, viola da gamba (bass viol) https://gutsbaroque.com Help us keep the music alive and growing each month:   / gutsbaroque   Performed live for a streaming audience 27 September, 2020 Thumbnail image credit: "The Merry Fiddler" by Gerard van Honthorst, 1623, made plague-ready by John Ott, Sr., illustrator extraordinaire PROGRAM AND CHAPTER LINKS: 0:00 concert introduction & intro to Cima 5:56 Giovanni Paolo Cima: Sonata 48 à 2: violino e violone 10:45 intro to Frescobaldi 12:40 Girolamo Frescobaldi: Canzon Prima 16:40 intro to Marini 18:35 Biagio Marini: La Gardana, symfonia per un violino o cornetto solo 21:07 intro to Castello 22:49 Dario Castello: Sonata Prima à sopran solo 27:27 intro to Fontana 28:22 Giovanni Battista Fontana: Sonata Terza à violino solo 33:08 intro to Marini 34:55 Biagio Marini: Sonata Terza, variata per il violino 42:27 intro to Buonamente 43:30 Giovanni Battista Buonamente: Canzon Prima à 2, violino e basso 47:33 intro to Uccellini 49:15 Marco Uccellini: Sonata Quarta à violino solo detta la Hortensia virtuosa 53:00 intro to Pandolfi Mealli 54:15 Giovanni Antonio Pandolfi Mealli: Sonata Prima “La Stella” 58:16 intro to Stradella 1:00:17 Alessandro Stradella: Sinfonia a 3 in e 1:06:54 intro to Leonarda 1:08:23 Isabella Leonarda: Sonata 12 1:17:48 intro to Bertali 1:18:29 Antonio Bertali: Ciaccona à violino solo 1:24:30 about the bow used in this concert Read complete program notes here: https://gutsbaroque.files.wordpress.c...
