Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important global oil routes, and any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz can affect the entire world economy. Because of this heavy dependence on the Strait of Hormuz, there is a proposal to build a canal through Oman as an alternative to the Strait of Hormuz. This canal would connect the Persian Gulf directly to the Arabian Sea, allowing ships to bypass the Strait of Hormuz completely. The estimated cost of this project is around ₹8.5 lakh crores, making it one of the most expensive infrastructure ideas ever. While India has strong engineering capability and experience in large projects, building such a massive canal to replace the Strait of Hormuz would be extremely difficult for India alone and would require Oman’s permission, global funding, and international cooperation.
