A leaving card with eleven signatures sits on the desk, and Marta and Sione ask a question every manager meets: is it ever right to half-train someone who is halfway out the door? Over five invoice lines, from a pub kitchen to a garden centre, they price the sentences people say to a colleague who has handed in their notice, and they give a cheaper sentence for each one.
You will learn to “hand in your notice” and “work your notice”, and what “till” means in “Just reduce it till it looks right to you”. You will also hear “Teach him the shortcuts anyway”, “I’d like to be shown the refund process properly before I go” and “The sauce isn’t on this list”, plus useful words such as “handover”, “in the loop” and “goodwill discount”.
Halfway through, the hosts swap sides, with Marta arguing the cold case and Sione the warm one. The total comes to two hundred pounds twenty for what would have been eighteen minutes of the right words.
Tell us in the comments which of the five lines you would have fixed first.
