How to ReGrow - Spring Onions. ReGrowing: Cultivating Savings and Scallions. Today we follow the story of two friends, Kesser and Steen, as they develop a home garden to promote self-sufficiency and financial savings. By learning to regrow vegetables like spring onions from kitchen scraps, the duo discovers how to bypass grocery store taxes and harvest their own fresh produce. The narrative emphasizes that sustainable gardening is not just about cultivation, but also about the economic benefits of producing food at home. Through practical techniques like collecting seeds and taking cuttings, the boys demonstrate how anyone can turn a small plot of land into a productive resource. Ultimately, the source serves as an encouraging guide for minimizing waste and maximizing personal savings through the cycle of harvesting and replanting.
ReGrowing
Autumn—also known as ‘harvest time’—naturally offers a wealth of rewards for the work you’ve put into your garden... assuming you’ve made it that far... perhaps you only have a flower box 🌺🌺🌺 on your balcony, up on the fourth floor 🏢🏢, but...
Kesser and Steen are in the process of starting a new vegetable garden in Steen’s family’s backyard. The two boys from the Nature and Innovation class have already set up a raised bed with several rows of strawberry plants 🍓🍓 And as Steen’s mother accepts more new initiatives, Steen’s dad is becoming more interested in the garden 🔥🥩 beyond just the grill on the patio 🍽.
The Danish government just talks and talks—about so many things... and when all that blah-blah is over, Kesser and Steen come up with their own ways to save money—like on VAT, for instance. Kesser suggests they simply buy less at the local grocer (only the items they really need), and Steen—who has a real head for business—gets the idea: paying no VAT is the ultimate saving!!
Autumn is the time when gardeners harvest the fruits of summer 🐝🧤👒 seeds to sprout for the next season, potatoes, onions, leeks, cabbage, pumpkins—plenty of things that can be stored for the winter. So, it’s not just about saving money, but also about having healthy, fresh vegetables for the family...
🫘🌱 Most people understand the concept of putting seeds in the ground and waiting... and some know how to take cuttings 🌿✂️🪴 from flowers to clone them 🌺🌺
Today, Kesser is going to show Steen how to “clone” an ordinary spring onion. You might remember that in the spring, they planted some small onion sets in a tray in a checkerboard pattern, and some of them seemed to be developing flowers (due to the cold)—much to the delight of beneficial insects 🐝.
“But damn it, Kesser, that means we’ll get seeds from them!!” Steen observes.
“Exactly—and then we’ll be ready to start next year’s onions from seed... without using bulbs...” Kesser replies, leaving Steen to figure out the rest for himself 🤔. “But I want to show you something... if you cut right here, just above the ground ✂️, the spring onion will keep growing—just like your hair grows every day... 💇🏼♂️ and chives do too...” Kesser explains.
“But what if you buy a bunch of spring onions at the grocery store?!” Steen asks, very curious.
“Same thing... cut off the roots (like you usually do) and stick the stump in the soil—then you can cut it back 3 or 4 times over the summer.”
“So the next batch is half price!? And faster than you can type ‘Tax Authority’ into your calculator... my dad is going to love this hack,” Steen replies, giving Kesser a huge hug 🐖. Steen’s mom isn’t a fan of getting dirt under her fingernails, so she agreed to let Steen handle the bookkeeping ✏️📖 and all the VAT they save goes into his piggy bank instead 💰
Then they have to remember to check if any of the onion flowers have produced mature seeds so Steen can take some home... because a penny saved is a penny earned 🐖
