In this lap steel lesson, I break down why rhythm and timing are so important—and why improving them can make even the simplest playing sound dramatically more musical. It’s easy to spend all of our practice time thinking about what notes to play. But when you play them is just as important. Good rhythm affects everything: your phrasing, groove, dynamics, ability to play with other musicians, and whether a simple part actually feels good. We’ll look at practical ways to work on rhythm on lap steel, how to become more aware of where you’re placing notes, and why developing a strong internal sense of time can do more for your playing than simply adding more scales and licks to your vocabulary.
