#jan #dismas #zelenka #score #sheetmusic #zwv #46 The partial autograph score to Zelenka's grand, uplifting yet tinted with sorrow Requiem in D Major, /Z. 46/ - composed for the funeral rites after the death of King Augustus I. of Saxony /“Augustus the Strong“/, Zelenka composed the Requiem in D, /Z. 46/, along with the sister work Officium Defunctorum, /Z. 47/ /Office of the Dead/, both integral parts of the exequies for the Saxon-Polish ruler. Zelenka had to finish this work in a great hurry, and implemented – suitable to the occasion – an impressing abundance of sound colors and inventiveness: muted trumpets and horns, chalumeau /the quintessential instrument of mourning at Dresden/, obligate fagotti as well as extremely virtuoso solo parts and fully developed counterpoints in the choral settings. Zelenka's final requiem presented here corresponds to Easter Sunday, something which explains a more optimistic and rich scoring here. Also a interesting comment I came across worth noting: "theologically, the musical development from an initial restrained polyphony to a final colorful operatic approach has a precise meaning: If Augustus had suffered and died in imitation of Christ, he would also be resurrected in imitation of Him on Judgement Day. Augustus' soul should be guaranteed salvation if the power of the composer's musical invocation is taken into account". It should be noted that parts of the Introit, Kyrie eleison, Sequence, Offertory, Agnus Dei survive only partially- as well as the Sanctus and Benedictus which are only contained in incomplete parts, in which the obligatory repetition of the "Osanna in excelsis" after the Benedictus is totally lacking.
