Playing France in the current meta feels less like leading a Great Power and more like managing a bureaucratic collapse while someone throws bricks at your windows. While every other major power has been elevated by recent DLCs and balance patches, France remains trapped in a cycle of stagnation and political paralysis.
In this video, we break down exactly why France has fallen to the bottom of the "Major Power" tier list.
1. The Political Power Black Hole
In modern HOI4, Political Power (PP) is the oxygen of your campaign. You need it for everything: advisors, industrial designs, military staff, and—most importantly—managing the new international mechanics.
The Penalty: France starts with a crippling daily PP penalty that makes even basic expansion or internal stability almost impossible to manage.
The Cost of Survival: While Germany or the UK are snowballing their economy, France is spending its meager PP just to stop a civil war or remove "Disjointed Government." You aren't playing to win; you’re playing to stay functional.
2. A Focus Tree Stuck in the Past
Compared to the sprawling, versatile trees of the USSR, Italy, or even the newer DLC minor nations, the French focus tree feels rigid and punishing.
Lack of Flexibility: You are often locked into long, 70-day focuses that provide minimal rewards compared to the massive buffs other majors receive.
The Waiting Game: By the time you finally remove your "National Spirit" debuffs, the war is already at your doorstep, leaving you with no time to actually benefit from your late-game focuses.
3. The "Rush Air" Meta Stagnation
Because France lacks the industry and PP to field a massive, high-tech army or a world-class navy, the "optimal" playstyle has boiled down to one thing: Rushing Air.
One-Dimensional Gameplay: To survive the German onslaught, you are forced to ignore diverse strategies and pour every resource into Fighters and CAS.
The Boredom Factor: When the only viable path to victory is sitting behind the Maginot Line and clicking "Deploy Air Wing," the identity of France as a versatile major power completely vanishes.
