How Somalis Built a $500 Million Empire in Minneapolis!

A community of war refugees arrived in one of the coldest cities in America with almost nothing. Three decades later, they've built an economic engine worth over $500 million a year — grocery stores, shopping malls, restaurants, and healthcare businesses that quietly transformed entire neighborhoods of Minneapolis. This is the real story of how Somali refugees, fleeing a collapsed government and a brutal civil war in 1991, ended up not in a warm port city but in Minnesota — and how a financial system older than any American bank, an abandoned warehouse turned into a 700-stall shopping mall, and a refusal to scatter across the country turned survival into something permanent. We trace the journey from Dadaab refugee camp to Cedar-Riverside's "Little Mogadishu," from a taxi driver's night shift to Karmel Mall, from Hussein Samatar's historic 2010 election to Ilhan Omar becoming the first Somali-American in the U.S. Congress — and we don't skip the hard, unresolved parts of this story either. This is World Citizens — where we go beyond the postcard version of a place and tell you the real story of the people who built it. 🔔 Subscribe for more real, deeply-researched stories of diaspora communities reshaping the cities they call home. #WorldCitizens #SomaliAmerican #Minneapolis #SomaliAmerican #Somali #Somalia #SomaliDiaspora #Minneapolis #Minnesota #CedarRiverside #LittleMogadishu #KarmelMall #Dadaab #HusseinSamatar #IlhanOmar #TwinCities #Mpls #Diaspora #ImmigrantStory #RefugeeStory #ImmigrantEntrepreneurs #DiasporaEconomics #Remittances #FinancialInclusion #CommunityWealth #SmallBusiness #BlackOwnedBusiness #AfricanDiaspora #WorldCitizens #RealStory #Documentary #Storytelling #HiddenHistory #UntoldStories #AmericanHistory #ImmigrationHistory #Immigration #Refugees #CivilWar #EastAfrica #HornOfAfrica #MuslimAmericans #BlackHistory #UrbanRenewal #AmericanDream #Healthcare #SomaliTikTok #SomalisInAmerica #MadeInMinneapolis #ExplorePage
