King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV (commonly known as King Oyo) of the Tooro Kingdom in Uganda left behind a prince as his heir, according to official kingdom announcements, but the boy’s identity has not been publicly revealed.
King Oyo (born 16 April 1992) died on 27 August 2026 at age 34 after a secret illness. He had reigned since 1995 (from age three, after his father Omukama Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III’s death), making him one of the world’s youngest modern monarchs. He was never officially married and had not installed a queen consort.
Official statements on the heir
• Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki announced that “the continuity of the Crown is assured” and that “His Majesty leaves behind a Prince as his heir, whose identity will be formally revealed at the appropriate time, in accordance with the traditions and customs of Tooro Kingdom.”
• President Yoweri Museveni later said Queen Mother Best Kemigisa informed him that Oyo left a young boy heir who would be introduced publicly at the right time.
Dispute over the claim
The Babiito royal clan (from which Tooro kings come) has disputed this. Omusuuga (clan head) Charles Kayondo Kamurasi stated that the clan had no prior knowledge of any biological child of Oyo and that the king left no known heir. The clan has formed a 21-member committee to oversee succession according to tradition, potentially looking to the broader lineage of Oyo’s grandfather (Rukidi III) if no verified son is presented.
As of early September 2026 (around the time of Oyo’s burial preparations), no name or further details about any son had been made public, and succession remained unresolved amid the conflicting accounts. There is no historical “King Oyo I” of Tooro matching this description—the late king is Rukidi IV / King Oyo.
