Language Journeys: Barkindji Lesson with BARKAA

For artist and musician Barkaa, learning the Language of her ancestors is powerful and healing. A proud Malyangapa and Barkindji woman, Barkaa takes her name from the Barkindji word for the Darling river, an honour she feels privileged to represent. Barkaa has witnessed first-hand the injustices and denial of culture in her own family and is vocal about the need for young people to reclaim Aboriginal identity through Language. Barkaa hopes that by speaking Language, communities and families can come together, reconnect and heal. Watch as Barkaa journeys back to Barkindji Country in Far West NSW and practices the Barkindji language with Language Elder Aunty Kayleen Kerwin and her family. 22-29 October 2023 is NSW Aboriginal Languages Week.
